Oh dear, I should really stop going to see sequels.  I may even have fallen asleep at some point as I lost the plot quite early.  What a pity that Daniel Radcliffe looks like he’s going to feature highly in the worst movies of my year.  Pointless and boring.

In spite of the dire reviews from the critics I really enjoyed seeing WoW come to life on the big screen at Hinckley Cineworld.  Full disclosure:  I’ve been a WoW player off and on for over 10 years so may be biased, but I was really curious how this would pan out and had a horrible sinking feeling after reading the professional critics reviews, but maybe they’re not gamers.  During the first couple of minutes, as we were introduced to the Orc heroes I was like hmmm…not sure I can root for the Horde.  (I’m an Alliance girl through and through) but then we switched to the sight of a familiar fortress hewn from stone.  Ironforge! my spiritual home (dwarf/hunter).  Then onto Stormwind, Goldshire, Elwyn Forest – all so familiar.  Although this has obviously been made to appeal to the widest audience there are lots of nods to WoWers – the portals, the gryphon flights (that land in the right place at Stormwind) and even the fleeting sight and sound of a Murloc!  The storyline was okay, the CGI was pretty impressive and overall a good time was had by all, well me at least.  I’ll be interested to see if non-WoWers find it entertaining but I got a kick out of it and from the ending it looks like it was set up for a sequel.

For Azeroth! For the Alliance!

As I leaving I was greeted by the manager, jokingly telling me I should be barred (I’m there so often), at least I hope it was a joke – yes, I’m sure it was a joke!

Good chemistry between Idris Elba and Richard Madden made this a watchable, shoot-em-up.  Elba, playing the hard bitten, playing outside the rules cop was mostly ‘Luther does France’ but none the worse for that.  An improbable story but fast paced with good action choreography.  If you’re interested in an audition piece for Idris Elba as James Bond or you just love Luther then it’s worth 90 minutes of your time.

Let’s get the accents out of the way.   One of my filmic pet hates is dodgy accents.   I’m thinking Tom Cruise in Far and Away and Julia Roberts in Mary Reilly.  I’m surprised that with all the expertise employed to create some of the most technologically advanced films ever we still struggle to either get the actor some dedicated voice coaching or if that’s not successful maybe employ someone who has the ability to do the accent for real, you know, like a native of England, Scotland or Ireland.  I wonder if film producers/directors believe that their star has an authentic accent or they decide it’s not that important.  It really IS important because it can become completely distracting and ruin a film for many of us.  Back to The Huntsman and I have to admit I didn’t see the first film in this franchise so Chris Hemsworth’s wandering accent came as a surprise. Scottish by way of Ireland and Northern England..just weird!

Accents to one side I did enjoy the spectacle of this film (I splashed out the £1.60 over and above my unlimited ticket to watch it in 3D) – the effects were stunning as were the costumes and makeup.  Casting Sheridan Smith and Rob Brydon as dwarves seems crazy and controversial, visually it worked really well and their humour and obvious chemistry added a light touch, but ethically I’m not so sure.  Did they really paste their heads on to actors with dwarfism?  Hmm. .  The storyline itself left me confused – there were obvious nods to the earlier movie so maybe it’s my fault for not watching the films in order.  Overall it was like a mash up of The Snow Queen, Frozen, Game of Thrones and a touch of Lord of the Rings but none the worse for that.  Fantasy eye candy.

I thought I must have missed some of the plot lines – did I momentarily fall asleep or were they so vague and contrived the story just seemed a mess?  And I was confused – I thought Superman and Batman were both the good guys.  I did enjoy the brooding intensity of Ben Affleck’s Batman, compared to the rather stilted  performance by Henry Cavill as Superman but this bloated film had me checking my watch at regular intervals and I did consider walking out at one point, I was bored!  More positively the last 30 minutes were lively and enjoyable and it was refreshing to see the lovely Holly Hunter not botox’d up to the eyeballs, but overall poor script and way too long!
